Thread Lift
Thread lift is a cosmetic procedure that involves the shaping, or “lifting” the skin in different areas around the body by tightening it using a medical grade thread. Commonly referred to as an alternative to surgical facelifts, thread lift can tighten your skin, reduce sagging, and restore youthful contours to your face. Thread lifting also stimulates collagen production which rejuvenates the skin by making it more firm and supple

Benefits of thread lift
If you’re looking for a non-surgical solution to lift and tighten your skin, thread lifts offer an innovative and effective approach.
Non-Invasive
Due to thread lifts being nonsurgical, there is very little to no risk of scarring as compared to face lift done with surgery. There is also a minimal chance of side effects occurring.
Instant Results
While complete results are achieved in a few weeks after the treatment, one of the notable benefits of thread lifts is the immediate improvement in facial contours.
Minimal Downtime
The quick recovery time after a thread lift allows the patient to return to their daily activities right after the procedure.
Reversible Results
Threads can be removed if the patient does not find their results satisfactory. However, some threads may be more difficult to remove than others.
Customizable Treatment
The threads come in various lengths and thicknesses, allowing the treatment to be adjusted to each individual’s unique needs and desired outcomes.
Natural Looking Results
The threads are strategically placed to lift and reposition the skin, creating a subtle, yet noticeable, improvement without an artificial appearance.
How do threads work?
Threads are strategically placed in the skin where they work in two ways:
- The threads have tiny hooks or barbs along their length, which help to anchor the skin and create an immediate lifting effect. By gently pulling and repositioning sagging skin, the threads provide an instant tightening effect.
- The threads also stimulate the body’s natural collagen production. Over time, the threads gradually dissolve, but their presence continues to stimulate collagen synthesis in cells of your body called fibroblasts. Collagen is a protein that provides structure and elasticity to the skin. Increased collagen production leads to improved skin firmness, texture, and overall rejuvenation, which can last beyond the lifespan of the threads themselves.
What happens during the procedure?
Before the procedure starts, the face is disinfected with alcohol swabs. Then anesthesia (usually local anesthesia) is administered at the site. A needle is used to insert the threads under the skin as the treatment is performed. These threads have special barbs or cones that gently lift and reposition sagging facial tissues. The treatment is finished by cutting the threads and making sure they are secure in place. Due to the anesthesia, pain is hardly felt at all. The procedure may take around an hour to complete.
What are the indications treated by thread lifts?
Thread lifts are commonly used to treat:
- Sagging or Loose Skin: The threads are inserted under the skin to lift and tighten sagging areas, allowing them to reverse mild to moderate skin laxity.
- Facial Contouring: Thread lifts can help enhance facial contours by lifting and repositioning sagging skin. They are particularly beneficial for defining the jawline, lifting the cheeks, and improving the appearance of jowls.
- Brow Lifting: Thread lifts can elevate and shape the eyebrows, providing a subtle and natural-looking brow lift.
- Nasolabial Folds and Marionette Lines: Thread lifts can reduce the appearance of nasolabial folds (smile lines) and marionette lines (lines that extend from the corners of the mouth to the chin).
- Neck Lifting: Thread lifts can be used to tighten and lift sagging skin in the neck area creating a more defined jawline.
- Mild Skin laxity in other Body Areas: Thread lifts are not limited to the face and neck. They can also be used to address mild skin laxity in areas such as the arms, thighs, and abdomen, providing a non-surgical option for body contouring.
Types of Threads
- PDO
PDO threads are the oldest type of threads, which are made of polydioxanone, a synthetic biodegradable polymer that has been used in surgery for many years. They are ideal for the rejuvenation of the skin and reducing fine wrinkles and pores. The polyester they are made from is absorbed into the body within 6 – 8 months and continue stimulating collagen production for another 4-6 months. They have 3 main types:
- Mono These are smooth threads, without any barbs or cogs, that increase collagen production and provide natural-looking tightening results. They provide a minimal lifting effect as they are placed superficially in the skin.
- Cog threads PDO cog threads are designed with tiny barbs that securely anchor into the skin, functioning like miniature fishhooks. This unique feature enables them to provide support and lift sagging tissues.
- Screw/Tornado threads PDO screw threads consist of one or two intertwined threads, which are utilized to provide volume restoration for sunken areas of the skin.
- PLLA These threads also stimulate the production of collagen and provide volume to the skin. Compared to PDO thread lifts, PLLA thread lifts stimulate collagen production much more effectively. These threads are absorbed within 12 – 18 months. These can function as a volumizer and cause minimal inflammation.
- PCL Polycaprolactone (PCL) thread lifts regenerate collagen for the longest time, compared to other types of threads. These threads are extremely flexible which is why the procedures they are used in are less painful and more comfortable. The body absorbs these threads in about 24 months, leaving behind a collagen framework within the skin, offering support, tightening, and preventing sagging.
How long do the results last?
Results can last anywhere from 12 – 24 months depending on the type of threads used and the post treatment care performed. Touch ups can be performed when the results decrease.
Who is a good candidate for a thread lift procedure?
People aged 30 – 50 years who have mild-to-moderate signs of facial sagging or skin laxity are good candidates for the treatment. They may have experienced a loss of volume or have specific areas of the face that require lifting.
Aftercare instructions for thread lift procedure:
Aftercare for a thread lift procedure involves:
- avoiding touching or rubbing the treated area
- applying cold compresses to reduce swelling
- taking prescribed medications as directed
- sleeping on your back
What are the possible side effects of thread lift procedure?
