What is electrolysis hair removal?
Electrolysis hair removal is a method used to permanently eliminate unwanted hair by targeting and destroying individual hair follicles. During this procedure, a trained electrologist inserts a fine probe into the hair follicle and then applies an electrical current. This electrical current damages the follicle’s ability to grow new hair. After the treatment, the unwanted hair is gently removed. It is considered one of the few FDA-approved methods for achieving permanent hair removal and is suitable for all hair types and skin tones.
What happens during the procedure?
A topical anesthetic is applied to the area of treatment to minimize discomfort. A very thin wire is inserted into the hair follicle and an electric current is passed through the wire, providing enough heat that it destroys the hair root, and the hair falls out. The procedure can last from 15 minutes up to 1 hour, depending on the area being treated. Multiple sessions are typically required to ensure all hair follicles in the target area are treated.
Over time, as the sessions progress, hair growth diminishes until it is permanently eliminated. Because your technician must target each follicle individually, electrolysis is not be a great choice for large treatment areas.
