Dermabrasion
Dermabrasion is an exfoliating technique that involves the use of an abrasive device to remove the top layers of skin. It was originally used to treat acne scars and address skin texture concerns, but it has grown in popularity as a way of reducing visible signs of aging.

Indications treated by dermabrasion
Dermabrasion offers multiple benefits for the skin:
Smoother Skin Texture
Since it removes dead skin cells on the surface and promotes new, healthy skin tissue to rise, dermabrasion leaves the skin smoother with more even skin texture and diminished pores.
Fine Lines & Wrinkles
More collagen is produced in the skin due to the procedure resulting in reduction in fine lines & wrinkles.
Scars from Acne, Accidents, Surgery
Due to the top layer of skin being removed, scars from acne or deeper scars from injuries can be eliminated.
How does dermabrasion work?
A special equipment is used to “sand” the skin to improve skin texture and smoothen it as the top layers of skin are scraped away. New, smoother layer of skin replaces the skin that has been treated.
What happens during the procedure?
An antiseptic will be used to cleanse the skin and either a numbing spray or anesthetic gel will be given to ensure maximum comfort during the procedure. Once the numbing medication has taken effect, a high-speed rotary instrument with an abrasive diamond wheel or wire brush will be used to scrape away the outer layers of skin and reveal the new layers underneath. The treatment can take a few minutes up to an hour, depending on the area being treated.
The treatment does not cause any pain or discomfort and is safe for fair skin types. There is no downtime involved. Often dermabrasion is used in combination with other treatments to improve the appearance of scars, fine lines & skin texture.
Aftercare instructions for dermabrasion:
After the treatment, use a moisturizer and broad-spectrum sunblock. Avoid makeup for at least 24 hours after the procedure. Avoid sun exposure for a few days after the procedure.
What are the possible side effects of dermabrasion?
Redness and dryness are common side effects which usually subside on their own within 24 hours.
You should not opt for the treatment if:
- you have dark skin as dermabrasion can permanently discolor your skin and cause PIH.
- you have active acne as dermabrasion can flare up the acne and cause further infection.
