Hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation is a common dermatological condition characterized by the darkening or discoloration of patches of skin. It occurs when there is an overproduction of melanin, the pigment responsible for the color of our skin, hair, and eyes. Various factors can contribute to hyperpigmentation, including sun exposure, hormonal changes, inflammation, and skin injuries. Types of hyperpigmentation include melasma, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and age spots.

Types of Hyperpigmentation

Types of hyperpigmentation include:

  • Melasma: Melasma appears as dark patches on the face. It is commonly associated with hormonal changes and is prevalent among women.
  • Age spots, Sunspots: These form due to prolonged exposure to sunlight with inadequate sun protection. Brown or black spots appear on parts of the skin that are exposed to the sun.
  • Freckles: Freckles are small, flat, tan or light brown spots that are often genetic in nature. They are more commonly seen in individuals with fair skin and tend to darken with sun exposure.
  • Post inflammatory hyperpigmentation:  Patches or spots of darkened skin appear anywhere on the body, usually due to injuries or skin inflammation such as acne, cuts etc.
  • Dark Circles: Dark circles refer to the hyperpigmentation that appears as dark or discolored areas around the eyes.

How to avoid hyperpigmentation?

To help prevent hyperpigmentation and minimize its occurrence, you can take the following steps:

  • Sun Protection
    • Wear sunblock with an SPF of at least 30 and reapply every 2-3 hours. Wear protective clothing such as long sleeves and seek shade during peak sun hours.
  • Treating Skin Conditions
    • Do not pick on your acne lesions or scabs. Treat acne and other inflammatory conditions like psoriasis & eczema timely, as these can lead to PIH.
  • Skincare
    • Avoid harsh skincare products and unsupervised deep cleansing treatments that can irritate the skin. Avoid bleaching and waxing your face as the chemicals might cause burns. Do not use over the counter formula creams as these have a high risk of side effects.
